Guide for parents
What gear do kids need for junior rugby?
Junior rugby doesn't need much gear. Here's what your child needs for the season, and where second-hand makes sense.
The essentials
| Gear | Notes | Second-hand? |
|---|---|---|
| Mouthguard | Compulsory for games in junior rugby in NZ. No mouthguard, no play. Replace it every season. | No, always buy new |
| Boots | Rugby or football boots that fit well with sports socks on. Check your club's rules on studs. | Yes, a great buy |
| Shorts and socks | Usually in club colours. Check what your club asks for. | Yes |
| Jersey | Often supplied by the club for the season. | Ask your club |
| Headgear | Optional. If worn, it must fit properly and securely. It helps with cuts to the scalp and ears, but there's no evidence it prevents concussion. | Yes, if it fits well |
| Drink bottle and bag | Name them. Every club has a lost property pile. | Yes |
Buying boots second-hand
- Try them on with the socks your child will wear for games.
- Leave about a thumb's width at the toe. Too much room causes blisters.
- Check the studs are all there and not worn down to the sole.
- Look for splits where the upper meets the sole.
Mouthguards
A mouthguard is the one item to always buy new. A fitted mouthguard is best, and many families get one through their dentist or club. Pack a spare in the kit bag.
End of the season
Boots, shorts and headgear often have plenty of life left when kids move up a size. List them on SizeUp and $2 goes to your club.
Find rugby gear on SizeUp. Second-hand kids rugby gear from Kiwi families, or list what they've outgrown for $5.
