Guide for parents
What gear do kids need for netball?
Netball is simple to kit out. The one thing worth getting right is shoes. Here's what your child needs for the season.
The essentials
| Gear | Notes | Second-hand? |
|---|---|---|
| Court shoes | Non-marking soles with good grip and ankle support. Netball involves lots of quick stops and landings. | Yes, if the sole and support are in good shape |
| Ball | Younger players often use a smaller ball. Check which size your club or school uses. | Yes |
| Uniform | Usually set by the club or school, sometimes supplied for the season. | Yes, a great buy |
| Bib | Usually supplied by the team. | No need |
| Drink bottle | Name it. | Yes |
Game-day rules
Players usually can't wear jewellery on court, and fingernails need to be kept short. Check with your club, as umpires will ask before the game.
Buying court shoes second-hand
- Check the tread. A smooth, worn sole loses grip on the court.
- Press the heel and the sides. They should feel firm and supportive, not squashed.
- Try them on with sports socks and leave about a thumb's width at the toe.
- Avoid shoes worn mostly outdoors. Courts need clean, non-marking soles.
End of the season
Kids often outgrow netball shoes and uniforms before they wear them out. List them on SizeUp and $2 goes to your club or school.
Find netball gear on SizeUp. Second-hand kids netball gear from Kiwi families, or list what they've outgrown for $5.
